Recovery Reminder
Self trust isn't built by making bigger promises.
It's built by keeping smaller ones.
Introduction
Most of us think self trust is something we either have or
we don't.
But that's not really how it works.
Self trust is built the same way trust is built in any
relationship.
Through consistency.
When someone repeatedly follows through on what they say
they'll do, you begin to trust them.
The same is true with yourself.
Every time you keep a promise, no matter how small, you're
sending your brain a powerful message:
"I can count on myself."
Why We Keep Breaking Promises
Maybe you've said things like...
"I'll start Monday."
"I'll go for a walk after work."
"I'm going to set better boundaries."
"I'm done texting him."
At first glance, these seem like simple goals.
But when we repeatedly don't follow through, something
deeper begins to happen.
We slowly stop believing our own words.
Not because we're lazy.
Not because we don't care.
Often it's because we make promises that are too big, too
overwhelming, or don't match where we are emotionally.
Our nervous system is looking for safety.
Big changes can feel threatening.
So we stay with what's familiar, even when it's not what's
best for us.
Start Smaller Than You Think
One of the biggest mistakes we make is believing bigger
goals create bigger change.
Usually, the opposite is true.
Instead of promising yourself you'll exercise every day...
Promise yourself you'll take a five-minute walk.
Instead of promising you'll completely change your morning
routine...
Promise yourself you'll drink one glass of water before
coffee.
Instead of promising you'll never text your ex again...
Promise yourself you'll wait ten minutes before responding.
Small promises are easier to keep.
And every promise you keep becomes evidence that you can
trust yourself.
One Small Step Today
Ask yourself:
What's one promise that's so small I know I can keep it
today?
Not tomorrow.
Not Monday.
Today.
Then keep it.
That single promise matters more than you realize.
Reflection Journal
Think about one promise you've been making to yourself over
and over.
Could you make it smaller?
What is one promise you know you can keep today?
Your Next Step
If you find yourself feeling overwhelmed before you've even
started, you're not alone.
Sometimes the first step isn't pushing harder.
It's calming your nervous system first.

Final Thought
Every promise you keep becomes another reason to believe in
yourself.
You don't rebuild self trust overnight.
You rebuild it one small promise at a time.
